Should You Start a Blog?

If you are thinking about including a blog as part of your marketing strategy, there are several key points to consider. Here are a few of the pros and cons that you should include as you look at your options:
Pros:
1. Authority Status
Blogs are widely accepted as a way to exhibit your authority. As long as you post with consistently good information, your readers will grow to know and respect what you do. It also helps to keep you top of mind if you post regularly compared to your competition who your subscribers may rarely hear from.
2. It's Not Difficult
It really isn't. With the wide variety of resources that exist today, getting a blog up and running can take as little as a few minutes using the free platforms, to maybe an hour or two with the hosted platforms. If you're not into the techie stuff, it's also very easy to find someone to help you get up and running. If you can use email, you can blog.
3. It's Inexpensive
Compared to many other advertising and marketing options, blogs are relatively inexpensive. Even if you pay a couple hundred dollars for someone to set it all up initially, after that normal hosting is your only ongoing expense. If you already have a website, you may be able to bundle it in with your current host package without an increase in cost.
Cons:
1. Time Commitment
There's no doubt that blogging requires a time commitment. In order to be the most effective you'll need to post regularly though the timing does not need to be exactly consistent. At least once a week is okay, but more often is better.
2. On-going Need to Come Up With New Ideas to Write About
Along with the time commitment, there is also a commitment to new and fresh information. You don't have to write it all yourself, but you still need to find something that, hopefully, informs and entertains your readers week after week.
3. Someone Needs to Be Able to Write Well
Most experts would agree that even though you don't have to write all your content yourself, you do need to write enough so that people get to know you and your area of expertise. This means you need to be able to communicate well in written form, or at minimum, you need to find someone to write for you while still keeping the tone and voice authentic to your business.
So should you start a blog? If you feel good about the pro side, but the cons scare you a little, the great thing is that you can get help with all of the potential issues that might be in your way right now. If you believe that if you can make it work, a blog would be a benefit to your business, I say go for it! You really have little to lose and much to gain.
